Tips on Foot Care For a Diabetic


High blood glucose due to diabetes can cause two complications that can hurt one's. Nerve damage: As the name suggest if causes damage to nerves in legs and feet. This result in loss of feeling, namely pain, heat or cold in one's feet. In other words it causes numbness in one's feet. This lack of feeling is due to nerve damage. it is also known as diabetic neuropathy. It can result in an infection or a sore. The sore or wound may get worse because the affected may not know of its existence since the loss of sense.

Poor blood flow: The lack of enough blood to legs and feet result in difficulty for a sore or infection to heal. This condition is called peripheral vascular disease. These two problems together cause a foot problem.

It may start with a small blister on one's foot resulting into amputation due to complications triggered by diabetes. This can be avoided by following proper foot care methods which are listed below:

1. Check feet daily: If not possible ask someone else to do it.

2. Wash feet with warm water and dry them thoroughly and carefully especially between the toes.

3. File calluses or corns if any with an emery board or pumice stone.

4. Cut toe nails regularly and file the sharp edges.

5. Always wear clean and comfortable cotton socks.

6. Always wear comfortable footwear to protest feet.

7. Check shoes before wearing for sharp objects or torn edges that can damage feet.

8. Quit smoking. There are evidences which indicate that smoking can worsen heart and vascular problems and result in poor blood circulation to feet.

9. Visit doctor regularly for yearly foot check up.

If the above mentioned are follow diligently, it can result in healthy feet and less foot problems amongst diabetics.
